Engineering – Not a Male Domain!
For one month, the open-air touring exhibition “Queens of Structure” will make a stop in Stuttgart. The exhibition is dedicated to the female pioneers in construction. Our colleague Angelika Schmid takes part in the panel discussion at the opening of the exhibition on 25 October 2023 in Stuttgart. As project manager, she has been responsible for the structural design of Stuttgart’s new main railway station for years – a challenge she has mastered passionately and with great assertiveness.
The touring exhibition shows female civil engineers from past decades whose projects represent the wide-ranging fields of activity and topics in civil engineering. What all pioneering women have in common is a great passion for their profession and their self-evident action in a (hitherto still) male-dominated professional field. Like their male colleagues, they seized opportunities, pushed ideas forward and implemented them as creatively as they did competently. Yet their achievements remained mostly hidden and rarely received any appreciation.
The instructive experiences of the female civil engineers presented are encouraging role models for future generations of female civil engineers in a professional field still heavily dominated by men.
“Queens of Structure” was shown for the first time in summer 2021 as part of the “Women in Architecture” festival in Berlin. Werner Sobek is supporting the exhibition in Stuttgart through sponsorship.
