Earthquake Safety through Shock Absorbers
The earthquake safety of hospitals is particularly important, as the care of the wounded must also (and especially!) be ensured in the event of a very severe earthquake. Two hospitals in Istanbul have now been completed as pilot projects for particularly earthquake-proof construction. The buildings in Şişli and Göztepe were designed by Stuttgart-based HWP Planungsgesellschaft, with Werner Sobek responsible for the structural engineering. The core of the safety concept is a so-called base isolation, which allows the building to move independently of the surrounding soil in the event of a quake. Special bearing structures in the basement floors also serve as shock absorbers in the event of an earthquake.
