Floating ships
The Niederfinow ship lift in the northeast of Germany is a full 60 m high and 130 m long. It enables inland vessels travelling between Szczecin in the east and Berlin in the west to overcome a height difference of 36 m within five minutes! The lift can even accommodate ships with a length of up to 110 m (“large Rhine ship”) and a total weight of 3,500 tonnes. The connection to the upper outer harbour is made via a 65 m long canal bridge. Werner Sobek was responsible for the structural engineering of the building frame of this extraordinary project. More information can be found here and in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
