Worth Seeing: What to do with Construction Waste?
In December 2024, the flagship of German television news, the Tagesschau, reported in an interesting article on mineral waste that can neither be recycled nor incinerated: slags from metal production, ash from the incineration of our household waste and, in large quantities, construction and demolition waste. Although these materials make up a very large proportion of our waste volume, the number of landfills where they can be disposed of is steadily declining – a development that poses ever greater problems for all parties involved in the construction process.
How can we drastically reduce the volume of waste that cannot be returned to technical or biological cycles – while at the same time ensuring that as much of the built environment as is needed worldwide is created? This is a question that we are also vigorously pursuing at Werner Sobek.
