A Pavilion for the Public Space

“HolzProKlima Baden-Württemberg” is a local competition aimed at towns, municipalities, and districts that show their commitment to protecting the climate via the intelligent use of wood, a renewable resource. Werner Sobek designed a special prize for the state of Baden-Württemberg to be awarded to the competition winner and constructed in their region. Dubbed the “Pavilion for the Public Space”, this special prize can serve as a bus stop, a bus shelter, or simply as a place to relax.

Wood’s potential as a modern building material is reflected in the pavilion’s construction and design. The roof, walls and various spots to sit and lean within the structure itself are all created using a continuous band of cross-laminated timber panelling that has been reduced to the lowest weight possible. This organic form not only permits the addition of modular extensions, but also allows the concept to be further developed into different product ranges with varying functions and features. Weatherproofing the pavilion and making it easy to construct using local materials and manufacturers were important considerations that were taken into account during the developmental process.
