Brücke Sophia Jacoba in Hückelhoven

Bridge Sophia-Jacoba

The old Sophia-Jacoba colliery in Hückelhoven was closed back in 1997. The site has now been undergoing redevelopment for some time, including the creation of a generational park that brings people together through play, sport and recreation elements. Werner Sobek and Doser Kempen Krause Ingenieure GmbH were commissioned with the object and structural engineering of a new bridge that connects the Schacht 3 colliery site with the Millicher Halde for pedestrian and cycle traffic.

Trough Bridge on Old Colliery Site

Embedded in an idyllic landscape and the newly created facilities, the bridge fits in very well with the overall area. As the future main access to the Millicher Halde, it is visible from afar. The use of weatherproof steel with its characteristic rust-brown patina for the superstructure and the filigree supports creates a harmonious connection to the park’s features, whereby the trough bridge, which is designed as a semi-integral, 4-span structure, is reminiscent of the history of the old colliery.
