KAFD Dome Schmetterlingshaus Riad

KAFD Butterfly Dome

The Butterfly House KAFD Butterfly Dome, designed by Gerber Architects, is located on a bridge connecting two areas of the King Abdullah Financial District in Riyadh. Werner Sobek was responsible for structural engineering, facade planning and complex geometry consulting for this aesthetically very appealing project.

Oasis of Calm in the Midst of Bustle

The building has become an urban landmark and creates an oasis of peace and quiet amidst the bustle of the district.

The dom-shaped butterfly house is located on a bridge over the Thumamah Highway. The geometry of the dome was designed to optimally correspond with functionality and comfort. The building envelope is a spherical cycloid with a chessboard-like surface. The curvature of its structure highlights the entrance without affecting the homogeneity of its appearance. And forms an ideal orientation point for visitors approaching the building.
