Ropeway Stations Koblenz
For the Federal Horticultural Show 2011 in Koblenz, Werner Sobek designed key elements of the ropeway system in close cooperation with Doppelmayr. It connects Ehrenbreitstein Fortress with the city centre. Werner Sobek was not only responsible for the graphic design and the interior of the cable car cabins, but also designed the membrane covers that provide weather protection for the upper and lower stations.
Airy Membrane Covers as Weather Protection
The textile cover consists of a high-performance fabric only 1 mm thick, which is stretched over a filigree supporting structure made of steel. At night, the discreetly illuminated stations transform into spatial bodies that glow from within and seem to float above the ground.
The roofs of the valley and mountain stations followed the same basic design principles, but were charmingly adapted to the respective local conditions and seem to float above the station. From the viewer’s perspective, their structure dissolves upwards, reflecting the ephemeral character of the facility.
