Stuttgart 21
Unique Major Project in the Center of Stuttgart
The Stuttgart 21 rail project involves a large number of structural changes in the state capital Stuttgart. We are proud to have been involved in the planning of this special major project for many years! In addition to the redesign of the Staatsgalerie subway station and the revitalization of the historic Bonatzbau, we are primarily responsible for the structural engineering of the new station concourse.
Here we present a selection of the many interesting films, podcasts and articles that we and many others have produced in recent months and years on the subject of Stuttgart21. We are sure that the complexity and innovative power of this project will also fascinate you.

June 2023: All Chalice Supports are in Place!
On June 21, 2023, the last of a total of 28 chalice supports in the new Stuttgart station concourse was stripped – a milestone in the Stuttgart21 rail project. Our company founder Werner Sobek and architect Christoph Ingenhoven were also present at the ceremony – the Düsseldorf architect designed the chalice-shaped columns, while our office was responsible for the structural engineering.
How the Goblet Supports were Created
A Deutsche Bahn film published in June 2023 impressively explains the engineering origins of the chalice-shaped columns for Stuttgart’s new main station – our project manager Angelika Schmid is one of the main protagonists…
April 2023: Open Day at the Construction Site
Around 90,000 people visited the construction site of Stuttgart’s new main station at Easter 2023. For three days, Deutsche Bahn invited visitors to the open construction site of the project designed by architect Christoph Ingenhoven, in which Werner Sobek played a key role. In particular, our chalice supports, which will one day provide natural lighting and fresh air in the new underground station, have become a real magnet for visitors.
S-Bahn Crossing at the new Stuttgart Station
The S-Bahn crossing in Stuttgart’s new main station spans a lower-lying existing tunnel that runs at right angles to the new tracks. The bridge structure rests on bored pile walls, with goblet supports and a shell roof forming the upper end. Due to the enormous load-bearing capacity of the structure and its limited accessibility during operation, the planners had to introduce various technical innovations to make the project feasible.
A detailed documentation of this challenging project has been published in the magazine “Bautechnik”.
September 2020: "Staatsgalerie" Stop Opened
On September 11, 2020, the new “Staatsgalerie” light rail stop in Stuttgart was put into operation in a ceremony attended by Ex-Lord Mayor Fritz Kuhn and architect Christoph Ingenhoven. A formerly underground facility was transformed into a light-flooded stop.
The New Stuttgart Main Station
As part of the Stuttgart-Ulm rail project, the existing Stuttgart terminus station is being converted into an underground through station. A key design element of the new platform concourse is the so-called chalice supports. In a specialist article in the magazine “Beton- und Stahlbetonbau“, we have described the planning of these unique components in detail. The whole article is available here.
